The Smoke Tree takes it's name from the large flower plumes that take on a cloud like appearance. You can start to get an idea of the texture if you visit my post at http://www.earlyforest.com/2009/11/photos-american-smoke-tree-flowers.html The image on the top has the feathery texture that, when seen in great quantity all over the surface of the plant, can give it a smoke like appearance. I have some better photos of Cotinus coggygria that I will try to post tonight or tommorrow for you.
